2. Try to learn a bit about how audio actually works. Also look into psycho-acoustics(the science on how our brains interpret sound) and audiology(the science of hearing). A little knowledge in these will help you not only to get better sounding tracks but will also help you evade bad tips and espescially bad products.

I don't really know where to find good information on audiology. The things I know I've learned from the school I'm attending. It's not the most important of the subjects named. Acoustics(the science of sound) and psycho-acoustics are arguably most important.
The most important stuff on audiology is learning what your ears can take without hearing loss and what it can.
Our hearing is extremely durable when you look at what it can endure but there are some things that should be noted.
1. While we can endure transients of 120 dB without taking damage(that is if we don't listen to it for very long times) it's easy to take damage from undynamic music. When listening to brickwall-mastered music one should always be careful.
2. Our "defensive" mechanisms doesn't work as well when listening to music in headphones so be extra careful then. Espescially with compressed music.
3. Also be careful with sounds that are in the area we hear loudest(due to resonances created in our ears), namely 3-4 kHz, which is incidently a area that is often raised significantly in mastering to make the song sound louder.
4. Just use a little common sense and try to protect you hearing from extreme sound levels. Invest in good earplugs if you go to a lot of parties/concerts.
A producers hearing is one of his most important tools and damaging it will hurt both the sound and music.
