i use quite lots of compressors in my psytrance tracks. actually i use a compressor everywhere, if it should be there.

Me too. Compressors have parameters, its not like sticking a compressor on a channel, means over squashed sounds.
Resonant filter leads and filter drones are not a matter of carefull mixing. some synth filters that have the character I like, do tend to emphasise different frequency ranges by different amounts as you sweep the spectrum, especially analog filters. Stick a multiband compressor, set the bands repsective thresholds/ratios and let the filter scream all the way through the spectrum, yet keeping the "screaming" consistent across the spectrum.
Try doing that with fader automation, even if you get it right, the sound is never as thick across the spectrum...and that's just one small example.

If people don't have a good grasp of dynamics tools, fair enough, don't use them.
But don't blame the tools that are there in your aid.

+1 on the less is more.

Peace out.

i don't believe all those people who say i don't use compressors or eq at all ... it's a snobbish bluff
yes i try too use less, especially on midi where i have a lot of control of dynamics and frequencies
but sometimes you want too colour the sound and that is not a crime

so in classical music you don't use chorus effect so what now we all should take this rule to trance ?
it is basicaly the same statement

and less sometimes means not enough also take that for consideration

i would say : "it's not about quantity, it's about quality(litteraly)."           http://soundcloud.com/magimix-1/chilling-forest-whispers

classical music is pure naturalistic no comps no effects just good microphones and recording techniques like ortf. And good locations.

Chorus in classical? Of course, it exists - if you have more than one player in a group.

as a segment of the piece, not an effect.

Yes, as an effect.
When you have a group of identical instruments playing the same part (in unison). This is exactly what the (electronic) chorus effect is attempting to reproduce. Except, a dozen of violins actually sound better than a violin sample chained to a chorus plug.

Nice tips. I am using compression if i need something more punchy or in the opposite more constant and controlled.

I think the best is to avoid using those by adjusting midi and synth instead. But in my case tho, 90% of the time synth wont sounds ok and midi just wont do it all the time.           My music http://soundcloud.com/disrupted

Good tips!

Some things I would like to add though.

1. Try to get things as good as possible before even thinking about effects. Learn how to program your synths instead of trying to fix things with eq:s, compressors and such.

2. Try to learn a bit about how audio actually works. Also look into psycho-acoustics(the science on how our brains interpret sound) and audiology(the science of hearing). A little knowledge in these will help you not only to get better sounding tracks but will also help you evade bad tips and espescially bad products.

3. When using any kind of sound-changing processing (compressors, eq:s, distortions) make sure to compare the unprocessed sound with the processed at the same perceived level. Go back and forth until you think they sound the same level, then compare how they sound. This way you won't get fooled to think the processed sound sound better just because it's louder.
